unexpected beauty
so red ripe
sweet honey
juice runs down my fingers
as i devour
the smooth skin
open
the fragrance
released
the delicacy
freed
the seed
untangled
the reason to exist
consumed

in the dizzying beautiful darkness
of flames like crosses with halos
a fevered kaleidoscope of imagination
a deeper fortune than her smile

a place i can’t enter
a shelter from weird strangers
a haven from the ugliness of the world
(through cunning and evasion)

existing on the fringe
the throb of blood
the animal choices
the rich red cells driving our bodies

as she blew out the candle

i sit here in the sun
through an open window
devoid of birdsong, lilacs, harbingers of spring
yet i feel movement
in the solid ground a stirring
just before the stillness of sleep
and in that place between this world and the dream
in half-sleep, oblivious to time
life before silence
before innocence
memories in fragments
awakenings
remorse, renewal, rapture
make strange dream fellows
