the mirrored lake
a double vision
impermeable, incomplete
like beauty
universally misunderstood
and below, the fathomless dark.
is beauty the lake
its reflection
or beyond that illusionary surface
among the shapes i dare not look
in the shadows
like the one we made
with me holding you,
but holding back.
how else to describe
love and fear
and the resignation
that only one
will be my fate,
without the completing beauty.

The darkness and longing for the beauty is so sad to me. The sadness of this piece radiates from the "page", especially when one reads the last few lines. The "completing beauty" that will never be had....sigh.
Sometimes there can be ripples on that lake giving you the wrong vision. Perhaps the beauty lies there, just a bit deeper, and you holding back keeps you from finding that beauty you wish to complete.
This is truly wonderful, Peter.
"like beauty
universally misunderstood"
I have a feeling that that line's infinite poignancy shall always remain with me.
three great comments: the first with definite insight; the seocnd with a yearning for the truth; and the third worthy of an ovation.
